Creating the perfect powder room when building or renovating

What you need to know to create a powder room you and your guests will swoon over.

Powder rooms – though often small – are a great opportunity to have some fun with colour, textures, and lighting. When looking to build or renovate, it is important to consider intentional design to create a small but mighty powder room. In this article, we share some tips to consider ensuring your powder room utilises the space effectively while creating a lasting impact that supports the style of the rest of the home.

Consider light sources.

Many powder rooms do not have much access to natural light, if any. If you are lucky enough to have a nearby window in your space, be sure to make the most of the natural light streaming in, after all, it will help to make the space feel much larger. If like many of us you do not have access to natural light, remember to incorporate plenty of sources of light into your design. This would typically include ceiling lighting such as downlights in conjunction with hanging pendants and/or the use of feature wall sconces.

Play with colour.

Adding coloured elements such as feature basins can be an effective way to add visual interest without the need for extravagant tiling or wallpaper. Adding a pop of colour with the use of a feature basin can tie in with otherwise conservative tiling such as minimal whites or grey colour palettes or can pair impeccably with coloured terrazzo tiles or wallpaper.

Dress your walls.

Powder rooms are a great opportunity to get creative with tiling patterns, feature print wallpaper, or panelling. For a statement, without the use of busy wallpapers, add variation between tiling and the colour of the grout for a striking contrast. If you are wanting to keep the design quite timeless, play with tiling patterns such as chevron or herringbone to add interest to white or neutral tiling without committing to a specific colour palette.
